Repairing a folding phone: the Pixel Fold

The inner panel on early units is prone to failing at the fold edge where the bezel meets the screen; that is an inner-display replacement and we do it in house. No dust rating, so hinge grit is common. Cover screen is a separate, cheaper part.

Screen replacement

The Pixel Fold has a 7.6-inch folding inner display and a separate cover screen, and they are two different repairs at two different prices. Most drops break only the cover glass. A crease that turns into a dead line, a dark patch at the fold or a screen that stops responding on one half means the inner panel. We replace inner panels and service the hinge in house rather than sending them away; those parts are usually ordered, so allow 3 to 5 business days.

Water damage

The Pixel Fold is rated IPX8: water resistant when new, but with no dust rating. Grit in the hinge is the usual result. Water resistance also depends on seals that are broken by any repair, so we replace the seals when we close it back up.

Battery replacement

Phones from 2023 are now at the age where the battery is the most common reason a Pixel Fold comes to the counter. Fast drain, sudden shutdowns in the cold or a screen that is lifting at one edge from a swelling cell all point to the battery. We fit a new cell, reseal the phone and verify charging and battery health before you leave.

Among the 2023 Pixel line the Pixel Fold has the largest screen at 7.6 inches. By comparison, the Pixel 7a has a 6.1-inch screen, an OLED panel, an aluminum frame; the Pixel 8 has a 6.2-inch screen, an OLED panel, an aluminum frame; the Pixel 8 Pro has a 6.7-inch screen, an OLED panel, an aluminum frame. Parts are not interchangeable between these models even when the sizes match, so tell us exactly which one you have when you book.

Back glass

The back of the Pixel Fold is glass. A cracked back is a real repair, not cosmetic, because it lets in moisture and grit; we replace the panel, transfer the camera lens glass and any wireless charging or magnet ring, and reseal.

Charging port, cameras and buttons

A charging port that only works at an angle is usually lint, and cleaning it is free. A port that is dead or loose is replaced. Cameras, speakers, microphones and buttons are all modular on the Pixel Fold and are replaced the same day when the part is in stock.

Parts for this model may need to be ordered, so most repairs are finished in 3 to 5 business days. Screens and batteries for the most popular models are stocked as soon as they are available.
